• If there is a passenger with a wheelchair/scooter, you may have to push, drag or if
  physically able to, carry a passenger out of the vehicle. Please be sure to avoid
  injuring yourself and use rules of proper lifting. If you are unable to assist the client,
  alert first responders of their presence and need assistance at the scene.

Breakdowns

In the event of a breakdown, please do the following:

  • Move the vehicle from the lane of traffic to a safe location to avoid danger to
  passengers, if possible;
  •  Set 4-way flashers;
  •  Report on the incident to dispatch and your agency director;
  •  Call 911 emergency services, as required;
  • Dispatch will do its best to coordinate the remaining trips on your schedule, and if
  there is a passenger in the van, one to your location to complete the trip, if possible.

Medical Problems

If there is a major medical issue with a passenger. Immediately radio to dispatch so they
can contact emergency services. Know the location of the medical facilities along your
routes. In some cases, it may be best to get the passenger to the nearest medical facility.

In the event the passenger is not breathing or has a pulse, using hands-only CPR (cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation) if you are comfortable and able to do so. The use of hands only
CPR can improve the future outcomes of a passenger until emergency services arrive.

If there is the possibility of an injury to the neck or spine, a bone fracture, do not move the
passenger. Doing so could cause further injury, instead try to keep the passengers calm by
letting them know that emergency services are on the way.

Operating Vehicle Procedures

By using LLLC driving practices, you can remove or reduce risks while transporting
passengers. The LLLC driving practices are techniques you can use that will help you can
use to help you avoid accidents and be prepared for any traffic situation. These principles
help you maintain a safe amount of room around your vehicle, improve your visibility, and
provide you with extra time to make decisions. Using these practices for 30 days will help
make these practices your norm.

Competent drivers are an essential part of the Going Places Transportation Program.
Driving skills learned must be practiced for safe, economical and efficient transportation.
