Loading & Unloading Procedures

Stopping for Loading & Unloading

There is a safe technique in making stops that protects all involved. Your steps become
habitual. You should practice the following sequence of safety:

  • Sight Distance – Your vehicle must be clearly visible from front and rear
  • Give traffic adequate warning that you are going to load or unload.
  • Use directional signals
  • Slow down
  • Check your mirrors
  • Pull as far right as possible and come to a complete stop
  • Turn on your 4-way flashers prior to stopping
  • Place vehicle in park and apply service/parking brake
  • Check mirrors again to make sure it is safe to load/unload
  • Load/unload passengers

Plan ahead. Be sure to arrive at the pickup or drop off address on the proper side of the
street. Passengers should never cross the street to board or exit the vehicle. Make sure your
route ensures this.

When you are sure you can re-enter the roadway safely, do so. Allow traffic to clear and
cancel your flashers. Indicate you intend to merge back into traffic. Check your mirrors
again to make sure you have enough room to safely re-enter. Enter the roadway when it is
clear to do so.

Parallel Parking

  • Approach parking space slowly
  • Turn on the right turn signal
  • Check traffic both ways
  • Stop in traffic lane, with rear of the van even with the front of the parking space
  • Back slowly, if clear, using flat mirrors to observe clearance and “Pivot Point” for
  correct steering
  • Complete the maneuver without coming more than one foot from the curb
  • Turn off signal
  • Put vehicle in park

Potential Hazards you may Encounter

A hazard is any road or other road user that is a possible danger. Seeing hazards lets you be
prepared. You will have more time to act if you see hazards before they become
