Phase IA Literature Search and Sensitivity Assessment for the proposed Town of Boston
Water System Improvements Phase 2, Town of Boston, Erie County, New York (NYSOPRHP
No. 23PR05087).

SCOPE OF SERVICE

  • Review environmental setting of project area (physiography, geology, and soil data).
  • Determine expected depth of potential cultural resources from environmental data.
  • Conduct historical research and indicate location of project area on topographic
maps, soil survey maps, and historic maps.
  • Search the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation
(NYSOPRHP) and New York State Museum (NYSM) files to locate archaeological sites
within 1 mile of the project area. The site file search will also identify historic
properties in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NR)
and the National Register Eligible listing (NRE).
  • Assess archaeological sensitivity of the project area (based on results of site file
search and environmentally sensitive landforms on slopes equal to or less than 12%
that are within 328 feet of permanent water, hydric soils, within or near known
archaeological sites, and locations of standing or demolished historic structures).
  • Field reconnaissance (photograph field conditions and prior ground disturbances).
  • Map the location of photographs, prior ground disturbances, and any archaeological
  features identified during field reconnaissance.
  • Utilize data from background research, sensitivity assessment, and field
reconnaissance to determine an appropriate Phase IB subsurface field investigation
  methodology, as necessary.
  • Prepare Phase IA report and distribute digital copies to the NYSOPRHP, Town of
  Boston, and CPL.

COST $4,795 (due upon receipt of invoice)

All archaeological work will be conducted in compliance with the Standards for Cultural
Resource Investigations (NYAC 1994) adopted by the NYSOPRHP. Following completion of
Phase IA research, a Phase IB field investigation may be necessary to determine if any
previously undisturbed cultural resources will be impacted. If necessary, a separate scope
for the Phase IB investigation will be provided based on the archaeological sensitivity. To
authorize the Phase IA investigation, please return a signed copy of the proposal.
