Employees who feel that they are in danger, that another employee is in danger, or who witness questionable behavior, have a responsibility to report the situation to a supervisor or the Village Clerk. Incidents warranting confidentiality will be handled appropriately and information will be disclosed to others only on a need-to-know basis. In an emergency situation, employees should notify the Village Police Department or call 911. Risk Reduction Measures Hiring: All employees considered for hire will be subject to criminal background check. Identifying and Reporting Risk: While it is not possible to predict every act of violence, some behaviors can, at times, be an indication of future violent acts. Employees are expected to exercise good judgment and discretion to inform their supervisor, the Village Clerk, or the Police Department, if any employee encounters behavior in the workplace which could be a sign of potentially dangerous situations. Such behavior may include, but not limited to the following: Discussing weapons in an inappropriate manner, or bringing them to the workplace Displaying overt signs of extreme stress, resentment, hostility or anger Making threatening, hostile, or harassing remarks Sudden or significant changes in behavior that caused fear for your safety Displaying irrational or inappropriate behavior Employees who feel that they are at risk of violence in the workplace for any reason, including situations resulting from issues outside of work (such as domestic violence), should advise the Superintendent of Public Works, Village Clerk, or their Supervisor. Dangerous/Emergency Situations If and when possible, employees should avoid confrontation with anyone who is armed, dangerous, or who displays overly aggressive or hostile behavior. No attempt should be made to disarm or engage the individual. If a supervisor can be safely notified of the need for assistance without endangering the safety of the employee or others, such notice should be given. Employees should contact the Village Police Department or call 911 in an emergency situation. Corrective Action Threats, threatening conduct, or any other acts of aggression or violence in the workplace, will not be tolerated. Any employee determined to have committed such acts will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. Non-employees engaged in violent, hostile or harassing acts on the Village’s premises or against village employees in the performance of their work duties will be reported to the proper authorities and fully prosecuted.
