Are there any specific issues or opportunities in Aurora that you feel we haven’t covered today as they relate to land use & zoning but should be included in the comprehensive plan? The state of the Town’s County and State roads are not good. How would you envision a successful Aurora in the next 10-20 years, and what role do you think this comprehensive plan should play in achieving that vision? We envision the same. Not much different, maybe more grocery options. Do you have any concerns about how this comprehensive plan will be implemented, or do you see any challenges in putting it into action? Without money or resources, how will any suggestions get done? What happens after the plan is adopted? Will we have to make changes to the zoning map? We need better communication on what a comprehensive plan is so we can push against the pushback. Village of East Aurora Focus Group Strengths We have a supportive development plan; the Village encourages development in the Village, housing can be concentrated in the village, and there’s a gentle density transition between the Village and the Town. The Village acts as the cultural and population center for the Town. We share services. It’s cost effective and efficient, although we would like to see the expansion of the East Aurora Fire Department. Weaknesses The Route 219 expansion in Springville bypassed the village and lead to huge chain development and loss of small businesses, the Town and Village don’t want that. As development within the Town increases, walkability will decrease. The Town and Village need to work together to mitigate that. Other safety aspects are also needed like bike lanes and sidewalks leading to the high school. The Town’s existing character is also important. Threats Housing affordability is a huge threat. The downsizing options for seniors and the ability for new families to move in is nonexistent. The construction of McMansions should be avoided. There is a lot of development pressure from big box stores. The Town should allow less plaza development outside of population centers and look at light industrial or housing instead. Opportunities We want the Town to have input on the Village plan. Smart expansion of the water and sewer lines makes sense as does industrial development. We should continue to maintain and prioritize the area’s natural beauty, retain Hamlet centers, and improve architectural standards. What is the #1 issue in the Village that would like to see addressed in this plan? The Village is the economic driver for the Town and that should be retained. The Town should not allow unsupportable density. The weekday traffic along Main Street should also be addressed. Imagine you’re reading a newspaper about the State of the Town 10 years from now. What would you want the headlines to say? The trees all grew back, cooperation equals success, and the charm and community between the Town and Village has been preserved. 154
