44 Regular Meeting August 13, 2026 meet the demand because mining year-round and create a huge stockpile through the spring/summer months. They mine about 17,000 tons a day to create the huge stockpile and in the winter their orders run about 25,000 tons a day, so they have to take about 8,000 tons a day from the stockpile they made in the spring/summer months. A couple of years ago Governor Hochul passed a law that all municipalities could only use Road Salt that was mined in New York State. It made American Rock Salt the only place in New York to supply the Road Salt, so the orders went from 25,000 ton a day to 35,000 ton a day, so they were mining 17,000 ton a day and taking 18,000 ton a day off their stockpile. On the weekends they could only mine 17,000 tons a day, so they couldn’t even recoup any on the weekends. Will they even be able to supply the town with what we need. Last year they brought in Compass Minerals from Canada, and everyone was happy, but when the lake froze there was no way to get it here. Now all the customers from Erie County will have to purchase the Road Salt from American Rock Salt only. There are other places you can get the Road Salt, but they are not set up for municipalities for the amount we would need, they are more for people that Salt parking lots, driveways, etc. and they are paying market price, we will be paying $93.24 per ton and they charge $180.00 a ton at that point it becomes a financial struggle than a supply struggle. Councilman Sebastiano asked Highway Superintendent asked if he spoke with his contact with the County. Highway Superintendent Unverdorben stated he didn’t really understand what he was saying. Councilman Sebastiano stated that he was told the mine is experiencing a lot of difficulty with labor and that the employees don’t want to mine any more Road Salt than they have to according to his contact. He advised him to purchase directly from Erie County. These procedures are changing; they are only supplying the State and only the Counties first and not worrying about the Towns. As of August, there will be no further mining being done. After August there won’t be any Road Salt because there is a labor problem. We will be out of luck. Highway Superintendent Ron Unverdorben Jr. stated we do purchase the Road Salt from Erie County off the County Bid. Highway Superintendent Ron Unverdorben Jr. stated the new Garbage truck chassis has been delivered to the Body manufacturer and looks like it is going to be on schedule. Also, the LED sign in front of the Community Center had a power failure and the break was found, it is alongside the building underneath where the sidewalks are for the Post Office. We figured the wire was when they did the digging for the Post Office and it eventually corroded. The quote we got to run new wiring in the ground is $7,500, so if the Board doesn’t have a problem, we are going to do something different. We looked at replacing the front doors at the Town Hall by using the existing door frame, purchasing 2 slabs and Clayton Ricketson was going to cut them to fit the door frame. Two slab doors are $6,200, so I am going to explore some other options. Supervisor Gingerich Jr. said they should be replaced before winter as we are losing a lot of heat from them.
