Phase 1B – Idlewood Subdivision - Hamburg, PA SOW – Phase 1B Archaeological Survey The purpose of a Phase IB archaeological survey is to conduct field testing to determine the presence or absence of archaeological sites within a project's APE. The following scope of work outlines the key tasks required to complete the Phase 1B investigations. Task 1. Pre-field Project Coordination This task includes the set-up of the project in our systems, monthly invoicing, staff coordination, communication with NY SHPO as required, and an internal project kick-off call within 5 business days of Notice to Proceed. Chronicle Heritage will present a fully justified sampling plan for any recommended field identification survey (Phase IB survey). This sampling plan will be developed for the project area and will be based on the results of the Phase 1A investigations and consideration for ground slope and wetlands. Support for assumptions underlying the model will be presented, and this will be derived from comparison of results of similar projects in the area and information on previously recorded sites in the project vicinity. Task 2. Field Survey Upon completion of pre-field work, Chronicle will conduct field-based surveys of the specified areas. Key tasks will include, but not be limited to: Subsurface testing: If subsurface investigations are required, field investigation will include an on-site field inspection of the proposed routes and subsurface shovel testing conducted according to SHPO standards in all sensitive areas. The data collected will be utilized by the archaeological field crew to identify any previously disturbed areas, wetlands, etc. that will be visually examined with limited shovel testing and undisturbed sensitive areas that will be shovel tested at the standard 50-foot interval. Shovel tests will be 30 to 50 centimeters in diameter and dug to undisturbed or non-artifact bearing subsoil at a 50-foot (15-meter interval) in relatively undisturbed portions of the archaeologically sensitive sections of the project area. Tests will be dug at 25-ft (7.5-m) intervals in front of Map Documented Structures (MDSs). All excavated soils will be screened through ¼-inch hardware cloth and results recorded on shovel test record forms. Any areas of severe slope (i.e., over 15%) will only be visually inspected. Several deeper tests will be dug in alluvial soils to assess the potential of deeply buried cultural deposits. Shovel test transects and shovel tests will be numbered in a systematic fashion, and tests will be indicated on project maps. Soils excavated from shovel tests will be carefully screened as noted above to recover any cultural material. All stratigraphic profiles will be described on appropriate field forms. Information recorded on the forms will include, but not be confined to, descriptions of soil type, texture, color, condition, and the presence or absence of cultural materials or cultural features. Documentation of fieldwork activities will include the recording of field observations in notebooks and on appropriate forms. Digital photography will be employed to document field conditions, observations, and field techniques. Photographs will be keyed to project maps. Any 2 92
